SlotForum's Doug Teggin visits the Italian slot car company and reports back on the company and it's recent innovations.

Who are Slot.it?

Slot.it was founded by Maurizio Ferrari (left) and Maurizio Gibertoni (right) in 1998. The two Maurizios had met whilst working at Med Automotive as engineers. Maurizio Ferrari (no relation to Enzo - the name is common in the region) initially worked for Life Racing Engines, a small Formula 1 team from Modena, then he moved to Scuderia Ferrari as a technical engineer programming the on board fuel injection systems used by Ferrari's Formula 1 cars in the late 1990s. Programming the quad processors of the racing cars in C and assembler, and mantaining the tools for the whole project as well as UNIX workstations, he worked on the V12 cars driven by Michael Schumacher and ported the software across from the V12 to the more modern V10 platform 1996 when the F1 rules reduced the engine capacity from 3.500 cc to 3000 cc.

Maurizio Ferrari and Maurizio Gibertoni went on to form Galileo Engineering - which is commercially known as Slot.it and are based in Reggio nell'Emilia, Italy - between Parma and Modena. Slot.it specialises in the design and production of 1/32 scale slot cars and accessories.

In the light and modern office in Reggio nell'Emilia, development work is carried out in the electronics lab. The team at Galileo Engineering actually started work developing electronic solutions for Giochi Preziosi, the Italian toy company. Now Slot.it is the main activity. It seems that with the SCP01 controller, the new Telemetry systems and the Oxigen wireless digital system, Galileo Engineering are keeping themselves busy.

Slot.it Parts & Spares Department

Ferrari f40 slot italy

Slot.it manage their parts and spares department as efficiently as you would expect. Working with multiple manufacturers in China and Italy is a complex job. Getting everything coordinated and parts shipped out on time when components come from different places must be tricky. Lead times from Chinese manufactures have increased in recent years. Problems with shipping and even pirates have caused disruption in recent years. So stock management is not as easy as you would think.

Cars are manufactured and assembled in China. Some parts such as gears are made in Italy. Part of the local production is shipped out to China for the cars and part comes to Slot.it for the parts division.

On the right one order is being prepared and obviously can comprise of various parts.

Gears are made in Italy. Delivered in large bags, then sorted and distributed in smaller qualities. These look so good when viewed all together.

The quantity and range of parts is just amazing. Paradise for a slot car enthusiast.

Slot.it Testing

Testing of Slot.it cars, parts and electronics is done in-house. A track is set-up in the Slot.it office with a mix of track (pictured right and below). I saw Scalextric, Ninco and Carrera track.

A mix of Digital and Analogue, and surprisingly with the Slot.it electronics, most of the track was compatible. Cars were switched from Analogue to Digital; driven on a mix of Scalextric Digital and Ninco Digital track - all amazing stuff.

More on the Slot.it Oxigen, Telemetry and controller products later.

Further testing takes place at the nearby Modena Slot Club track (pictured below). The superb 42 meter 4-lane Ninco track allows for extensive testing of cars, components and controllers. By amicable arrangement, the club allow the Slot.it engineers to use the track during the day.

Dino (pictured below right) is a mechanical engineer at Slot.it. He was testing a new batch motors when we visited. The club lap-record was even broken when we visited.

An amazing array of controllers. The Italian club racers have mostly migrated towards the Slot.it Telemetry system. It feeds the individual drivers with their lap and sector times via an ear-piece eliminating the need to glance over to the computer screens that have traditionally be used until recently.

I'll post some info on the Modena track and some of their club members later - some interesting insights into the Italian racers that may be of interest to other racers around the world.

My trip to Italy was too short. I would had loved to stay longer, but perhaps another trip also taking in the Ferrari factory and visitor centre should be made some time in the future.

A big thank you to Maurizio Ferrari, Maurizio Gibertoni and the staff at Slot.it. I really enjoyed my visit and appreciated the efforts made by the team to talk to me in English. I picked up a few Italian words, but I would have liked to have spoken more.
